Misiti/Calthorpe Cup Rnd 2 – Past Players Reunion
Special moment, 20 years on for Keilor Park
Keilor Park and East Keilor will relive and renew their rivalry on Saturday as the Essendon District Football League B-grade teams meet for the Misiti-Calthorpe Cup at Ray Davies Oval.
The day will be a special one for Keilor Park as the club holds the 20th anniversary of its 1990 senior and reserves premierships with a pre-match function.
The Devils won the senior match 11.22 (88) to 12.5 (77), coming back from a deficit of 9.1 to 1.11 in the second quarter. Keilor Park’s 1990 captain Brendon Smith recalled a brawl in the second quarter that resulted in two East Keilor players and one Keilor Park player sent off.
“I hit the deck and that started the brawl, there was a big blue in the second quarter,” he said.
“We had a player sent off as well but they had one less. We didn’t hit the front until the final quarter, around the 22-minute mark. As I recall we had as much of the playas they did, we just couldn’t kick straight.”
David Pinder’s goal from 45 metres was the kick that put Keilor Park in front, with Adam Carter sealing the game.
“Promotion to A-grade meant a hell of a lot, there were a lot of people who worked hard in the years before to recruit and change around the side,” Smith said. “A lot of the players may have moved on but we’ve always been a proUd club. Twenty years later the kicks get longer and the marks get higher, there were a lot of characters around the club at that time.”
Keilor Park has invited its supporters and past players to attend the function starting midday at Ray Davies Oval.
